    Secondary Trauma (2 credits)
Elba Karim, LCPC and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional

Working with foster children, and the child welfare system in general, especially those with attachment insecurity or other forms of childhood trauma can be a journey of endurance. Helping children affected by trauma can itself be traumatizing to those who are in these vital supportive roles. Learn about the signs of increased stress and/or secondary trauma. Discuss ways in which to alleviate the impact, while still providing for the needs of the traumatized child(ren). Leave with concrete ideas to better care for and connect with those professionals tasked to support children struggling with childhood trauma, thereby better supporting the children themselves.

Lourdes Blacksmith, Director of Government and Community Engagement at Waubonsee Community College

Save the date for this inspiring lecture by Dr. Blacksmith.  One of nine children, Blacksmith grew up in Morelia, Mexico, in the Michoacán province. At 16, she immigrated to the United States where she worked in a factory and spoke no English.  Through perseverance and hard work, she became a citizen and eventually, the head of Government and Community Engagement at Waubonsee Community College.  Her incredible story will teach participants about how important it is to bridge the gap between different cultures in order to lift others up.
